Water treatment specialists agree that at least 4 levels of filtration are needed to remove maximum contaminants from water. Most RO filters do exactly that by using multi-stage filtration technology.

In a 6-stage reverse osmosis filtration unit, the water passes through a series of steps which are:

Stage 1: A 5 micron Pre Filter or sediment filter to trap sand, silt, and other sediments.

Stage 2: 5 micron Carbon block filter to reduce the concentration of arsenic, chlorine, fluoride, and other organic compounds.

Stage 3: 1 Micron carbon block filter to further reduce the concentration of chlorine and fluoride.

Stage 4: Membrane to remove dissolved impurities in water, bacteria, viruses and up to 99.9% known contaminants in water.

Stage 5: Post carbon filter or polishing filter that improves taste and odor of water.

Stage 6: Remineralising filter to add minerals lost in the filtration process to give tasty drinking water.

Are all RO Filters the same?

While all reverse osmosis filters may look alike in terms of design and functionality, there are significant differences between each reverse osmosis system depending upon:

  • Number of water filtration stages

The number of stages in water filtration have a direct impact on water filtration quality. As the number of filters increases, the quality of drinking water also increases and so does the cost of the unit.

  • Component Quality

  • Amount produced per day

Before deciding to buy any reverse osmosis water filter, the amount of water needed must be considered. RO systems are rated on how much water they can produce in a single day. A 50 GPD (Gallons per Day) reverse osmosis system will generate enough water for a common household under normal water pressure of 60 psi. 

How much service and maintenance do Reverse Osmosis Systems require?

 RO FILTER REPLACEMENT

 

Replacement Filters: The replacement filters need to be replaced every 6 months to 2 years depending upon the type of filter and water quality. This guideline is very generic. You can always get accurate information on the product manual.

Annual Maintenance:

The filters should be changed every year. This can be done by any local water treatment professional. However, it is best to consult an expert. Watercare will take that for you by reminding you to service your reverse osmosis filtration system.

Can Reverse Osmosis System tackle Hard Water?

Yes, the reverse osmosis filters are quite effective in removing dissolved salts in water such as calcium. The RO system will work fine for any drinking water application, however, if your home water has high levels of hardness, it is not recommended to use reverse osmosis. Instead, a whole home water softener would be the best option in that case. High levels of calcium and magnesium (which are found in hard water) can cause the RO system to clog which would render the system useless.

Thus, in areas of high water hardness such as Dublin, Cork, Meath, Mayo, and Tipperary a water softener must be installed that will address the issue of water hardness before feeding the water into a reverse osmosis system. The RO system, in turn, would remove any other remaining salts in water to give you 100% pure drinking water.
